Setting Up A New Web Site

New Faculty Web Site

Before you begin you must contact BSS Web Support to request a new Web Site on the BSS server. Web Support will contact you when your account is established.

Important Information You Should Know About Your Web Site:

  • The name of your directory and the link to your site will be generated automatically (For Example: Faculty member John F. Kennedy will appear as http://bss.sfsu.edu/jkennedy). If you would like to change the name of your directory please contact Andrew Roderick with your request.
  • The software you will need is either Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer (free for SFSU machines) for a basic site, or Macromedia Dreamweaver ($194 at the SFSU Bookstore ), for a more advanced site. Ask Andrew Roderick for a consultation if you're not sure which is best for you.
  • All on-campus faculty computers supported by the BSS Computing Dept. have FrontPage already installed on them.
  • Faculty and staff Web sites may use up to 500MB of webspace on the BSS Web server.

New Department Web Site

Before you can begin creating the department web site please contact Andrew Roderick. When your site is set up you will be contacted. When you get the email then please follow these instructions to connect to your directory.

Some Tips and Suggestions for the New Department Website:

  • Take a look at some of the other department sites to get ideas (http://bss.sfsu.edu/anthro/, http://bss.sfsu.edu/ir/)
  • Be sure to use standard names for the various pages of your site (for example: Contact information should be Faculty & Staff or Faculty or Contact)
  • Make sure that every page as the same overall navigation

Contact Web Support to schedule a 60min. Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer or Dreamweaver training session. (Please be sure to have either software package installed on your computer prior to setting up an appointment)
